3 a.m., your baby is screaming, you pull back the blanket and find the diaper has leaked all over the pajamas and the sheet. Almost every new mom goes through this at least once. And the first thing that pops into your head is “Time to switch brands,” when sometimes the problem has nothing to do with the brand at all.
We compared 6 newborn-size tape diapers actually sold in Thailand on leak protection, breathability and price per diaper, using specs, standards and user reviews. We haven’t tested them ourselves yet, but we’ll tell you straight which extras are worth paying for, and which are just pretty words on the pack.
Which tape diapers leak less at night?
Quick Answer: There’s no independent testing in Thailand that confirms which brand leaks least. But models the makers say absorb for up to 12 hours, like MamyPoko, Huggies Gold and Merries, usually suit nighttime better than budget ones.
Honestly, size and how you put it on matter even more than the brand. Most nighttime leaks come from:
- Size too small. Baby is near the top weight for that size, so the absorbent pad can’t keep up
- Leg cuffs tucked in. Run your finger along the cuffs to pull them out every time
- Uneven tapes. One side tight and the other loose leaves a gap at the leg
- Boys. Point the penis down before closing the diaper, or it will leak at the waistband
Why are expensive diapers expensive?
Quick Answer: What you really get when you pay more is a softer, thinner feel. Words like organic or premium don’t always mean better leak protection.
Take one brand as an example. MamyPoko Super Premium Organic costs about 30 to 40 percent more per diaper than Premium Extra Dry. Both have an umbilical cutout, and the maker says they absorb for about the same length of time. What’s really different is the top sheet material and the thinness.
If you’re using a mid-priced diaper and your baby’s skin isn’t red, isn’t sweaty and it isn’t leaking, there’s no need to upgrade. Save the difference. Over a year, it adds up to quite a bit.
How to work out price per diaper without getting fooled by promotions
Quick Answer: Always divide the pack price by the number of diapers, because every brand and every promotion has a different count per pack.
| Model | Approx. price per diaper |
|---|---|
| BabyLove Easy Tape | ฿3 to ฿4 |
| MamyPoko Premium Extra Dry | ฿3.5 to ฿5.5 |
| MamyPoko Super Premium Organic | ฿4.5 to ฿7.5 |
| Merries | ฿6 to ฿9 |
| Huggies Gold Soft & Slim | About ฿8 |
These are the price ranges we saw at shops in Thailand when we checked. Buying by the case during sale campaigns is usually cheaper still. But don’t buy NB size by the case before baby is born, because some babies outgrow newborn size within a few weeks, and you don’t know yet which brand suits your baby’s skin.
NB or S: which size to start with?
Quick Answer: If your baby is a normal birth weight, start with a small pack of NB, and have size S ready, because NB in many brands only fits up to about 5 kg.

NB size in many models has an umbilical cutout, which helps keep the diaper edge from pressing or rubbing on the cord before it falls off. Read more about care in caring for your baby’s umbilical cord
One more little tip: the number of wet diapers a day also helps tell you whether baby is feeding enough. Have a look at signs baby is getting enough breast milk too.
Thailand’s heat: how to choose so baby doesn’t get sweaty
Quick Answer: Choose a breathable model, change often and let the skin get some air. That matters more than which brand you pick.
- Merries highlights the ventilation holes in its top sheet as a standout feature, good for babies who get damp easily
- Change right away when the wetness indicator shows it’s wet, or when baby poops
- During the day at home, let baby lie on a pad without a diaper for a while
- No need to sprinkle powder in the diaper. The NHS recommends avoiding talcum powder in this area
Take your baby to the doctor if…
Quick Answer: Most diaper rashes get better with frequent changes and keeping the skin dry. But if the rash doesn’t improve, spreads, or your baby has a fever, see a doctor.
- The rash doesn’t go away with this care, gets worse, or spreads outside the diaper area
- There are pus-filled bumps, open sores or peeling skin
- Baby has a fever, especially babies under 3 months, who should go straight to the hospital. Read more in fever before 3 months
- Clearly fewer wet diapers, dark pee, or baby is unusually drowsy
We don’t rank diaper rash creams or skincare products on this page. If you need medicine or a cream, it’s best to ask a doctor or pharmacist.
How we ranked
Quick Answer: We compared maker information, price per diaper from shops in Thailand and user reviews. We haven’t tested them ourselves yet. If we add shop links later, they will be clearly labeled and won’t change the order.
The absorbency figures are the makers’ own claims, not our test results, so we put weight on features we could check, like size, umbilical cutout, wetness indicator and price per diaper. Read all our principles in how we rank
Some leaks are just a normal part of life with a newborn. It doesn’t mean you chose wrong or aren’t taking good care. Keep adjusting bit by bit, and you’ll find the right one.

Questions parents ask
01Which tape diaper brand is best?
If breathability matters most, Merries does the job. If you want value per diaper with all the features, MamyPoko Premium Extra Dry does well. If your budget is tight and it's for daytime, BabyLove Easy Tape is enough. But the best brand is the one that fits your baby well and doesn't make their skin red.
02The diaper leaks at night. Do I need to switch brands?
First check whether the size fits, the leg cuffs are pulled out rather than tucked in, and the tapes are fastened evenly on both sides. If your baby is near the top weight for that size, try going up one size for nighttime. Most of the time this fixes it without switching brands.
03How many diapers does a newborn use a day?
The NHS says young babies may need changing as many as 10 to 12 times a day, dropping to around 6 to 8 times as they get older. So stock up on a fair amount of NB size, but don't buy lots of cases, because babies grow fast.
04What's the difference between tape diapers and pants diapers?
Tape diapers can be changed while baby lies flat, so they suit babies who aren't rolling yet. Pants diapers pull up and down, so they suit babies who are starting to crawl, wriggle or stand. Many makers recommend switching to pants once your baby moves around more.
05Are organic diapers better than regular diapers?
Diapers labeled organic usually use organic materials for only some parts, like the top sheet, which may feel softer. But leak protection depends on the absorbent core inside. If your baby's skin is fine in a regular diaper, there's no need to pay more.
06My baby has a diaper rash. What should I do?
The NHS recommends changing wet or dirty diapers as soon as possible, cleaning gently, patting dry and letting the skin get some air. If the rash doesn't get better, spreads, or your baby has a fever, see a doctor.
