When you travel to Chiang Mai with little kids, the hotel is half the fun. Little kids spend far more time at the hotel than you expect: naps, water play, hour-long breakfasts. If the hotel does not work, mom is tired for the whole trip.

So we chose this list with one question: “Can the kids play, and can mom rest?” That means a kids’ pool or shallow water area, activities for the kids, a room the whole family can sleep in, and a cot on request.

What to look for in a Chiang Mai hotel for little kids

Quick Answer: Look at 5 things: a kids’ pool or shallow area, a room big enough for the whole family, cots, a kids club or babysitting, and the distance to a hospital.

  • Kids’ pool. A separate shallow pool or shallow zone matters more than a big, beautiful pool.
  • Room. A family room, connecting rooms or a two-bedroom suite means your child can go to bed early without parents having to turn off the lights and scroll their phones in the dark.
  • Cots and baby gear. Ask when you book whether they have a cot, a baby bathtub and a bottle steriliser.
  • Kids club or babysitting. Most take kids 4 and up. If your child is younger, ask about babysitting instead.
  • Near a hospital. Little kids can get sick suddenly, so save the name of the hospital nearest your hotel. See pediatric hospitals and clinics in Chiang Mai.

Stay in town, or in Mae Rim or Hang Dong?

Quick Answer: For short trips where you want to go out to eat and explore, stay in town. For longer trips where you want to relax at a resort, choose Mae Rim or Hang Dong.

How to request a cot and baby gear from the hotel

Quick Answer: Mention it when you book, or message the hotel several days ahead, and be clear about your child’s age and what you need.

Short messages you can copy and send:

  • “We have a 10-month-old baby. Could we please have 1 cot? Is there an extra charge?”
  • “Could we please have a baby bathtub and a kettle in the room?”
  • “Could we please have a ground-floor room or one near the lift, as we will be using a stroller?”

If the hotel has no cot, bringing your own travel cot or bed rail gives you peace of mind. And an easy-to-grab bag for your child’s things is a lifesaver for the whole trip. See which diaper bag to choose.

Room and pool safety checks to do yourself

Quick Answer: Check the balcony, power sockets and bathroom door, and stay close to your child every time you are at the pool, even the kids’ pool.

  • Balconies and windows: do they lock, and is the railing high enough? Move chairs away from the railing too.
  • Low power sockets: ask the hotel for socket covers. Some places have them.
  • Bathtub: never leave your child in the bath, not even for a few seconds.
  • Swimming pool: not every pool has a lifeguard, so an adult must always be within arm’s reach. If your child is about to start swimming lessons, see baby swim classes in Chiang Mai.

Where to go during your days in Chiang Mai

Quick Answer: Pick places close to your hotel, no more than 1 or 2 a day, and come back so your child can nap in the room.

If you are staying in town, try kid-friendly cafes or restaurants with kids’ areas around Canal Road and Pa Daet. If you are staying in Mae Rim or Hang Dong, see family day trips nearby.

A trip with little kids does not need to be packed with sights. As long as your child sleeps well and mom gets to sip a coffee while it is still hot, that is already a very good holiday.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

  1. 01Which hotels in Chiang Mai have a kids club?

On this list, Shangri-La Chiang Mai, Meliá Chiang Mai, Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai and Veranda High Resort have kids clubs. Most take kids from around 4 years old, and younger children need a parent with them. Ask about the minimum age and any fees when you book.

  2. 02My child is under 4. Can a kids club still help?

Most kids clubs take children on their own from around age 4. For example, the Four Seasons La-On Kids Club takes ages 4 to 12. Younger children can join with a parent present. If you really want a break, ask about the hotel's babysitting service, which usually costs extra.

  3. 03Can I ask the hotel for a cot or crib?

Most hotels have cots you can request. Some are free, some charge extra, and numbers are limited. Mention it when you book, or message the hotel at least a few days before you arrive.

  4. 04Is it better for families with little kids to stay in town or in Mae Rim or Hang Dong?

In town it is easy to get to restaurants, hospitals and malls, which suits short trips. Mae Rim and Hang Dong are quieter, with better air and spacious resorts, which suits trips where you mainly want to relax at the hotel, but it is about a 20 to 40 minute drive into town.

  5. 05When should we avoid bringing little kids to Chiang Mai?

PM2.5 smoke season, which is usually worst from around February to April. If you have to come then, choose a hotel that has air purifiers or can provide one on request, and check the daily air quality before taking your child out of the room.
