Every time we take little kids out to eat, it is the same scene: dad eats fast first while mom carries the baby around the restaurant, then they swap, and in the end both plates have gone cold. Sound familiar?

So this time we picked only restaurants, with proper main dishes for a real meal and somewhere for the kids to play within sight. (This does not repeat our list of kid-friendly cafes in Chiang Mai, which already includes places like Nic’s Restaurant & Playground in Hang Dong.)

How to choose a restaurant with a kids’ area so you actually get to eat

Quick Answer: Check whether the tables can see the play area, whether the play area is enclosed or next to a road or water, whether the toilets work for kids, and whether the equipment suits your child’s age.

  • Tables that can see the play area. This matters most. If you can book a table by the play area, book it.
  • Enclosed space. A play area that is not next to a road, car park or water means mom does not have to get up every minute.
  • Your child’s age. Under-2s do best in an indoor play room with soft floors. Older kids love sand, water and slides.
  • Toilets. If your child is in diapers, a changing station helps a lot. If there is not one, you can bring your own changing mat.
  • High chairs. If your child cannot sit on an adult chair yet, ask when you book the table.

How to order so little ones can eat too

Quick Answer: Order one non-spicy dish for your child first, such as fried rice with no chilli, a Thai omelette, soup or a creamy pasta, then order for the adults.

  • For your child’s plate, tell the staff “no chilli, not spicy, less salt” (in Thai: “mai sai prik, mai phet, lot khem”).
  • Food often arrives piping hot, so spoon some into a separate bowl to cool before feeding.
  • Most places on this list also have Italian or Western dishes, and picky eaters usually accept pasta or pizza.
  • Bring kids’ cutlery, a bib and a snack to tide them over, in case the food is slow and your child gets hungry and cranky.

Safety checks to do yourself every time

Quick Answer: Check whether the play equipment is too hot, whether there is unfenced water or a fish pond, and have one adult watching the kids the whole time they play.

  • Metal play equipment. Touch it before letting your child play. In the daytime it can get hot enough to burn skin.
  • Water. Shallow pools, fish ponds or riversides: little kids can drown in just a few centimetres of water. Stay within arm’s reach.
  • Animals. Let your child feed animals with an adult holding their hand, and wash hands before eating.
  • Take turns watching. Agree with whoever you are with on who watches the kids when, so mom gets to eat a hot meal for at least half of it.

On days when you want the kids to have a proper splash, see baby swim classes and pools with kids’ areas in Chiang Mai. Or if relatives are coming to visit, have a look at family-friendly hotels for little kids in Chiang Mai.

Here’s hoping your next meal out is one where mom gets to eat while the food is still hot.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

  1. 01Which restaurants in Chiang Mai have indoor kids' play rooms?

BLOCK & PLAY has an indoor play zone with building blocks, jigsaws and developmental toys. Hannah Hahn has an indoor play room plus a wooden playground outside. Cup Fine Day has an air-conditioned indoor zone along with an outdoor play area.

  2. 02Do restaurants with kids' play areas in Chiang Mai charge a play fee?

Most do not, you just order food. Some have extra costs, such as BLOCK & PLAY, which charges around 120 baht an hour for the play zone, and Chada, where animal food is around 10 to 20 baht a basket. Prices may change, so check with the restaurant.

  3. 03Which restaurants have kids' toilets or changing stations?

Hannah Hahn has kid-sized toilets and a changing station. Daddy Lion has clean toilets that work for kids. Chada's toilets are fairly basic with no changing station, so bring your own changing mat.

  4. 04When is the best time to take kids to a restaurant with a playground?

In the early evening once the sun has softened, or in the morning before 10am, because outdoor metal play equipment gets very hot in the middle of the day. On weekends and holidays, call ahead to book a table near the play area.

  5. 05How is a restaurant with a kids' area different from a kids cafe?

Restaurants have a full menu of main dishes, so the whole family can have a proper meal, and many stay open into the evening. Kids cafes focus mainly on drinks, snacks and play space.

  6. 06What should we bring to a restaurant with a sandpit or shallow pool?

A change of clothes, a towel, a bag for wet things, a hat and shoes that can get wet. At places with a shallow pool, an adult must stay right beside the child the whole time, however shallow the water is.
