Baby oil compared 2026: plant oils and mineral oils ranked separately, which bottles are fragrance-free and which are good value
Baby oil compared. We looked at 9 baby oils sold in Thailand and split them into two rankings, plant oils and mineral oils. We read every label, checking fragrance, stated age and price per 100 ml.

Plant oil ranking
Bottles with a base of plant or seed oils and no mineral oil. They absorb into the skin a little and bring fatty acids with them. Price per 100 ml is usually higher. Scored with the same criteria as the other group.

Ever stood in front of the pharmacy shelf reading baby oil labels and felt totally lost? Every bottle says gentle. Some have Organic in big letters on the front, but flip it over and the first ingredient is mineral oil, followed by fragrance.
This time we picked 9 baby oils you can buy in Thailand, read every label one by one, and split them into two rankings: plant oils and mineral oils. The two work differently and the price gap is several times over, so ranking them together wouldn’t be fair to either side. We compared specs, the ingredients brands and shops disclose, price and where to buy. We haven’t tested them on baby skin ourselves yet, but we’ll tell you straight what’s in each bottle and who it isn’t right for.
Mineral oil or plant oil: which should you choose?
Quick Answer: Neither is better in every case. Mineral oil coats the skin to stop water evaporating and is cheap. Plant oils absorb into the skin a little and have fatty acids, but cost more. What matters more for little ones is that the bottle has no fragrance and is stated as safe for newborns.
- Mineral oil (Mineral Oil, Paraffinum Liquidum) isn’t dangerous. It’s been used for decades. It sits on the skin as a thin coating that helps stop water evaporating. Good for massage or wiping off residue. About ฿40 to ฿75 per 100 ml.
- Plant oils like sunflower, grape seed, jojoba and coconut absorb into the skin partly and bring fatty acids with them. They usually don’t leave a film, but they cost several times more per 100 ml, and some bottles contain nut or wheat oils that some families need to watch out for.
- For newborns, look at fragrance before oil type. Choose a bottle with no Fragrance, Parfum or essential oil names on the label, where the brand says it’s safe from birth.
- Test every bottle first. Apply a little to a small area, like the thigh, wait, and check for redness or a rash before using it all over.
Put simply, if your budget is tight and your baby’s skin isn’t sensitive, a mineral oil bottle is fine for massage. If your baby has thin, sensitive skin or is still a newborn, look for a fragrance-free bottle first, and worry about whether it’s plant oil or not after that.

How we ranked
Quick Answer: Every bottle was scored on the same 6 criteria. “No fragrance” and “stated safe for newborns” count double. Then we ranked each group separately.
We scored each criterion from 1 to 5 and took the average. The two that count double are:
- No fragrance or essential oils, because they’re a common cause of skin irritation, and the American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing fragrance-free baby products
- Stated as safe for newborns, because most baby oil is bought for use when baby is still very small
The other 4 count normally: a short, understandable ingredient list, no common allergens (wheat, soy, tree nuts), price per 100 ml, and actually being available in Thailand. If a shop or brand didn’t give the information for a criterion, we scored it as unconfirmed rather than guessing. We didn’t adjust scores for any brand. Prices were last checked on October 11, 2026.
Do newborns need baby oil?
Quick Answer: No, they don’t. Healthy baby skin doesn’t need anything extra every day. Oil is a helper for massage or dry skin, not a must-have.
In the first few weeks your baby’s skin will peel and flake, especially on the hands and feet. That’s normal and goes away on its own. Research on newborns in the UK also found that regularly applying pure olive oil or sunflower oil from birth made the outer layer of skin develop more slowly than in babies who had nothing applied at all.
If you do use baby oil, try this:
- Apply just a thin layer, enough for your hands to glide, not soaked
- Test on a small patch of skin before using it all over
- Avoid the face, around the eyes, and the hands your baby loves to put in their mouth
- If the skin is red, dry and cracked, or has a rash that won’t go away, see a doctor first rather than switching from oil to oil
What to look for on a baby oil label
Quick Answer: Check three things: whether there’s fragrance or essential oils, whether the first ingredient is mineral oil or plant oil, and whether the brand says it’s safe from birth.
- Fragrance and essential oils appear on the label as Fragrance, Parfum or oil names like Lavandula (lavender)
- The first ingredient tells you which group the bottle belongs to. If it’s Mineral Oil or Paraffinum Liquidum, it’s a mineral oil, even if there’s plant oil further down the list
- The word Organic on the front doesn’t mean the whole bottle is organic. In this ranking, two bottles have Organic in the name but the first ingredient is mineral oil (more below)
| Bottle | Group | Fragrance | Stated for newborns | Price per 100 ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skinhug | Plant oil | None | Yes | ~฿390 |
| Mustela | Plant oil | Yes | Yes | Couldn’t check |
| Enfant | Plant oil | Not stated by shop | Yes | ~฿220 to ฿399 |
| Tropicana | Plant oil | None (brand states) | Not stated | ~฿156 |
| Burt’s Bees | Plant oil | Yes | Not stated | ~฿265 to ฿495 |
| Johnson’s | Mineral oil | Yes | Not stated | ~฿64 to ฿73 |
| Watsons | Mineral oil | Yes | Not stated | ~฿49 to ฿56 |
| D-nee | Mineral oil | Yes + lavender | Not stated | ~฿42 to ฿47 |
| Babi Mild | Mineral oil | Yes + silicone | Not stated | ~฿70 |
What does Organic on the bottle mean?
Quick Answer: Organic on the front of a baby oil bottle may just be part of the product name, not a sign the whole bottle is organic. To trust that it’s really organic, look for a certification mark that names the certifying body and the organic percentage, and check the first ingredient too.
In this ranking, Babi Mild Baby Oil Sweet Almond Organic Argan and D-nee Baby Oil Organic Sweet Dream both have Organic in the name. But according to the ingredient lists on Watsons, the first ingredient in both bottles is mineral oil (Mineral Oil, Paraffinum Liquidum), and the plant oils come after the fragrance. The shop’s lists also don’t say which ingredients are organic. For Babi Mild, the list we saw includes almond oil, but we didn’t see argan oil named. The label on the actual bottle may differ from the shop’s web page, so flip over the bottle in your hand and check it too.
We’re not saying these two bottles are no good. You just shouldn’t pay for them thinking the whole bottle is organic. If you’d like to know how COSMOS, NATRUE and USDA Organic marks differ, and where to look when you flip the label, we wrote about it separately in does an Organic label mean the whole bottle is organic?
Which bottle is the best value per 100 ml?
Quick Answer: The mineral oil side is clearly cheaper. The D-nee twin pack works out to about ฿42 to ฿47 per 100 ml. On the plant oil side, Tropicana is the cheapest at about ฿156 per 100 ml.
If you massage your baby all over every day, a big, cheap bottle is clearly better value. But if you only apply a thin layer when the skin is dry, or massage before bed a few times a week, a 100 ml bottle lasts several months, and the monthly price difference is much smaller than the price tag suggests.
If you want a baby oil with no fragrance at all, what should you look for?
Quick Answer: In this ranking, two bottles say they’re fragrance-free: Skinhug and Tropicana. Only Skinhug also says it’s safe from birth. Every mineral oil bottle we checked has fragrance.
Fragrance-free bottles usually come from small or specialist brands, and cost more per 100 ml than pharmacy bottles. When choosing, look at these three things together:
- A short, understandable ingredient list, with no fragrance and no essential oils
- A Thai FDA (Or Yor) notification number on the bottle
- A patch test on a small area before using it all over, as with any oil
Choose the bottle that suits your baby’s skin and your family’s budget. No bottle is the best for everyone, and if your baby’s skin is already healthy, using nothing at all isn’t wrong either.

Questions parents ask
01Which baby oil brand is best?
It depends on what you're after. If you want a plant oil with no fragrance that's stated safe from birth, Skinhug scored highest in that group, followed by Mustela, which is stated for newborns but has fragrance. If you want a budget mineral oil that's easy to find, Johnson's came first in that group, but every mineral oil bottle we checked has fragrance.
02Why rank plant oils and mineral oils separately?
Because the two work differently and the prices are several times apart. Mineral oil coats the top of the skin and is cheap, while plant oils absorb into the skin a little and bring fatty acids with them. Ranking them together would be like comparing two different kinds of product, so we used the same criteria but ranked them separately.
03Do newborns need baby oil?
No, they don't. Healthy newborn skin doesn't need anything extra every day. Peeling and flaking in the first few weeks is normal too. If you'd like to use oil for massage, try it on a small patch first, and if your baby's skin gets red, dry and cracked, or a rash appears, talk to a pediatrician.
04Is mineral oil dangerous for babies?
Cosmetic-grade mineral oil has been used for a long time and is considered safe for external use. It coats the skin to stop water evaporating, but it doesn't have the fatty acids that plant oils have. What's more worth checking is whether the bottle has fragrance or essential oils.
05Why choose a fragrance-free oil for my baby?
Fragrance and essential oils are a common cause of skin irritation and allergic reactions. Baby skin is thinner than adult skin, so the American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing fragrance-free baby products. That's why we count this criterion double.
06Can I use olive oil from the kitchen on my baby instead?
We don't recommend it. Research in newborns found that regularly applying pure olive oil or sunflower oil made the outer layer of skin develop more slowly than in babies who had nothing applied. If your baby's skin is normal, it's fine to use nothing at all. If you do want to use something, choose a product made for babies and apply just a little.
