As your due date gets closer, the shopping list in your phone notes grows longer every day, and you start wondering, “Where should I buy all this so I don’t have to drive around in circles?” Some things you want to touch and try first, some things you want cheap, and for some, secondhand in good condition is fine.

So we have sorted this list by what you are buying rather than by shop. Just so you know up front, we are not paid by any mall or shop, and we are not pushing any particular brand.

Which items should I try in person before buying?

Quick Answer: Strollers, car seats, cribs, baby carriers and high chairs, because you need to check the size, weight and how they fold, and whether they suit your car and home.

Big malls like Central Chiang Mai Airport, Central Festival and Maya have lots of shops in one place. When you go, fold the stroller yourself, try lifting it into your actual car, and ask about the warranty too. Before you go, read Best lightweight strollers and Best newborn car seats so you know what to compare.

Where is the best value for diapers, formula and everyday items?

Quick Answer: Hypermarkets and wholesale stores such as Makro, Lotus’s and Big C. Big packs are usually better value, but always work out the price per piece.

  • Diapers: don’t stock up on too many NB or S sizes, because babies grow very fast. See how to choose in Best tape diapers.
  • Formula: if your baby needs it, use what your doctor or nurse recommends, and check the expiry date every time you buy a big pack.
  • Wet wipes, cotton wool, trash bags: buy them with your household shopping in one go, and save both fuel and energy.

Choose shops by where you live

Quick Answer: Shop close to home. In the weeks after the birth, moms don’t have the energy to drive across the city.

Where to find secondhand baby gear in Chiang Mai, and what not to buy secondhand

Quick Answer: Clothes, toys, books and baby carriers in good condition are good value secondhand, but car seats, bottle nipples and baby mattresses should be bought new.

  • Online buy-and-sell groups: moms in Chiang Mai trade a lot of secondhand items in social media groups. We have not named any groups, because we can’t confirm which ones are still actively moderated. Try searching for “ของใช้เด็กมือสอง เชียงใหม่” (secondhand baby gear Chiang Mai) and choose groups that still have recent posts and clear rules.
  • Meet in a public place to collect items, such as a mall car park. Check the condition before you pay, and don’t transfer a deposit to someone you don’t know.
  • Secondhand children’s books: Little Lion’s Bookshop in Hang Dong has a big choice of secondhand English books.
  • Don’t buy secondhand: car seats (you don’t know their accident history or expiry date), bottle nipples, baby mattresses, and personal-use breast pump parts.

Check before you go

Quick Answer: Shops inside malls open, close and move often. Call the mall or check its store directory before you go.

The information on this page was checked on 3 October 2026 using cnxlocal’s family guides and neighborhood guides. Before you head out, compare your list with our newborn essentials shopping list to see what you really need. And when you’re done shopping and want to take your little one somewhere, see Family day trips in Chiang Mai.

The best baby gear doesn’t have to be the most expensive. It just needs to suit your home, be easy to use and be safe. That’s enough.
