Anyone who’s carried a baby around a weekend market at 2 p.m. knows. The carrier reviewed as “soft and comfy” turns into a private sauna for mom and baby within ten minutes, and by the time you get home, your lower back starts protesting.
So we compared 9 carriers actually sold in Thailand and split them into two rankings: a budget group in the low thousands of baht, and a premium group around ten thousand baht. The truth is, a lot of families don’t want to spend over ten thousand baht on one carrier, and plenty of carriers costing just over a thousand work well until baby is over ten kilos. We looked at three things together: baby’s hips, mom’s back and the heat. We compared specs, standards and user reviews. We haven’t tested them ourselves yet, but we’ll tell you straight which one isn’t right for whom.
Which baby carrier is best for hot weather?
Quick Answer: Choose a mesh carrier, like BabyBjörn Harmony 3D Mesh or the SoftFlex Mesh version of Ergobaby Omni Deluxe, because mesh breathes clearly better than cotton or knit.
- Mesh lets air through and dries fast. Good for walking outdoors.
- Cotton is durable and soft, but gets hotter when you sweat. Good for malls or air-conditioned cars.
- Knit is very soft and good for newborns, but it’s the warmest.
Think of the carrier as an extra layer of clothing for baby. When you carry, dress baby one layer lighter, and stay out of the sun from midday to early afternoon.
What is the M-position and why does it matter for baby’s hips?
Quick Answer: It’s when baby’s thighs spread around the carrier’s body, supported to the back of the knees, with the knees slightly higher than the bottom. IHDI recommends it because it helps keep the developing hip joints in a stable position.
There’s one thing a lot of people get wrong: IHDI itself says it is not a product certification or testing body. So when a brand says “IHDI recognized,” it means the design follows the institute’s guidelines, not that it passed a safety test. What you can check yourself, and what works better, is:
- The fabric under baby’s bottom reaches the back of both knees
- Baby’s knees are slightly higher than the bottom, not dangling straight down
- In the first 6 months, carry baby facing in most of the time
Most carriers on this page are designed for the M-position (the ones that don’t say so, we’ve noted in the cons). But if the seat isn’t adjusted properly, baby’s legs can still dangle.
What to look for so your back doesn’t give out
Quick Answer: Look for a wide waist belt with a lower back support panel, because it shifts the weight from your shoulders onto your hips. Then wear baby high enough to kiss the top of their head.
Photo: RDNE Stock project / Pexels
- Waist belt should sit high at your waist, not hang on your hips, so baby’s weight doesn’t pull your back forward
- Shoulder straps should be equally tight on both sides. If only one shoulder hurts, the straps aren’t even
- Baby’s height matters. If baby hangs too low, your back arches and starts aching fast
In this ranking, the Omni Deluxe has the thickest shoulder and waist padding, while the Harmony stands out for its lower back support panel. If you already have back pain, these two are better choices than the Embrace, which focuses on being soft and light.
The TICKS rules: check every time you carry
Quick Answer: Tight, in view, close enough to kiss, chin off chest, and back supported. These five points help keep baby’s airway clear.
Photo: Yan Krukau / Pexels
| Letter | Meaning | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| T (Tight) | Snug | Baby is close against you, not hanging or swaying when you lean over |
| I (In view) | Always visible | Look down and you can see baby’s face, with no fabric covering it |
| C (Close enough to kiss) | Close enough to kiss the head | Tip your head down a little and you can kiss the top of baby’s head |
| K (Keep chin off chest) | Chin off chest | You can fit about one finger under baby’s chin |
| S (Supported back) | Back supported | Baby’s back curves naturally, not slumped or folded |
The Lullaby Trust warns that newborns, premature babies and babies under 4 months are most at risk with their airways, and that you shouldn’t breastfeed while walking around with baby in a carrier. If baby falls asleep in the carrier, check their chin and nose more often, and when you get home, move them to a firm, flat sleep surface, as in our safe sleep checklist for sharing a bed with baby
Under ฿3,000: how to choose a carrier that’s good value
Quick Answer: Cheap doesn’t mean bad. Just make sure it has a wide waist belt, a seat wide enough to reach the back of baby’s knees, a weight range up to about 15 to 20 kg, and that you buy from the brand’s official store.
- A hip seat with a carrier attached can be used separately. When baby gets older and wants up and down all the time, just the seat is handy.
- Check the starting age. Many models in this budget start at about 3 months. If you want to use it from birth, choose one that says 3.2 kg and up.
- A secondhand carrier from family is fine to use. Just check the seams, buckles and every strap first.
A carrier costing just over a thousand baht that works well until baby is ten kilos, and then gets saved for the next sibling, is very normal. Better to put the money you save toward a car seat. See our newborn car seat ranking
Cheap carriers on shopping apps: are they genuine?
Quick Answer: There are plenty of genuine budget-brand carriers. What to watch out for is a big-name carrier priced far below the official price, like a model that costs over ten thousand baht going for just over a thousand. Suspect it’s fake or secondhand.
When we checked prices, we found lots of listings using famous model names for a few thousand baht or less, several times below the official Thai price. A fake carrier can look exactly like the real one, but the buckles, seams and fabric haven’t been load tested. If a buckle breaks while you’re carrying baby, baby falls.
How to buy safely:
- Buy from the brand’s official store, or a distributor that gives you a warranty card
- Check the fabric label, model number and the Thai or English manual in the box
- If you get a secondhand carrier from someone you know, check the seams, buckles and every strap before using it
We explain more about secondhand and fake products in how we rank
Should you buy your first carrier while pregnant or wait until baby is born?
Quick Answer: You can buy while pregnant if you choose a model that works from birth without an insert, but try it on in the shop first, because every mom’s body fits carriers differently.
If you have a C-section, the waist belt may sit close to your incision. Ask your doctor when you can start using it. In the early weeks, dad or someone else at home can do the carrying. If you’re packing for the birth, also see our hospital bag checklist
How we ranked
Quick Answer: We compared manufacturer specs, information from IHDI and the TICKS guidelines, official Thai prices and user reviews. We haven’t tested them ourselves yet. If we add shop links later, they will be clearly labeled and won’t change the order.
We separated the budget and premium groups because comparing them directly isn’t fair, on both fabric and price. In the premium group, the Lift Hip Seat scored lowest. Not because it’s bad, but because it can’t be used with newborns and you have to hold baby with your hand the whole time, so it does a different job from the other carriers on this page.
Carrying your baby close to your chest is the coziest feeling there is. We just hope your back doesn’t have to suffer for it.

Questions parents ask
01Which baby carrier brand is best?
If you want one carrier that works from birth, breathes well and supports your back, BabyBjörn Harmony 3D Mesh and the mesh version of Ergobaby Omni Deluxe are the main choices. If your budget is tight and you'll use it in the first year, Ergobaby Embrace is better value. Most important of all, baby should sit in the M-position, with their face where you can see it.
02What kind of carrier is good for baby's hips?
The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) recommends the M-position: baby's thighs spread around the carrier's body, supported all the way to the back of the knees, with the knees slightly higher than the bottom. It also recommends carrying baby facing in for the first 6 months.
03What are the TICKS rules?
They're a safety checklist for carriers and slings: Tight, In view at all times, Close enough to kiss, Keep chin off chest, and Supported back.
04At what age can baby face out in a carrier?
Many carriers allow facing out once baby has good head control, usually around 5 to 6 months, depending on each model's manual. But IHDI recommends facing in for the first 6 months for the hips, and facing out should be for short periods, not for baby to sleep in that position.
05Is it dangerous to carry baby in a carrier in hot weather?
You can, but watch out for baby overheating. Choose mesh fabric, dress baby one layer lighter because the carrier works like an extra layer, avoid the midday sun, and watch for heavy sweating, a red face or unusual drowsiness. If you see any of these, take baby out to rest somewhere cool right away.
06Which carriers are under ฿3,000?
Our budget ranking includes Camera Hippa 5, Momcozy PureHug, Glowy Hip(Ster) Seat Neo Plus and Sunveno Hipseat. Choose one with a waist belt and a seat wide enough to reach the back of baby's knees, and check the weight range matches your baby's age.
07Are cheap carriers on shopping apps genuine?
Genuine budget-brand carriers do exist. But if it's a big-name carrier priced far below the official price, like a model that normally costs over ten thousand baht going for just over a thousand, be suspicious that it's fake or secondhand. Fake carriers may use buckles and stitching that haven't been tested. Buy from the official store or a distributor that gives you a warranty card.
08After a C-section, when can I use a baby carrier?
It depends on your wound and how you're recovering, because the carrier's waist belt often sits close to the incision. Ask your doctor first, and in the early weeks let someone else do the carrying.
