Where to Have Your Baby in Chiang Mai: Public and Private Maternity Hospitals, With Published Package Prices
Public and private hospitals for antenatal care and birth in Chiang Mai: locations, services, how to start antenatal care, Gold Card and Social Security, and package prices hospitals publish.

The moment that second line shows up, the first thing many Chiang Mai moms post in parent groups is “Where should I go for antenatal care?” The comments then fill up with friends’ favorite doctors and packages seen in ads. That works for them, but it may not fit your coverage, your budget or where you live at all.
So we are not ranking which hospital is “best”. We are not doctors, so we are in no position to judge the quality of anyone’s medical care. Instead, we cover the things that make choosing easier: which hospitals are public and which are private, which part of town they are in, what services they offer, how to start antenatal care, and package prices (only those the hospitals publish themselves, with the date we checked).
Public or private hospital for antenatal care in Chiang Mai?
Quick Answer: Start with your coverage, how risky your pregnancy is and the distance from home. Then look at rooms and convenience.
| If you… | Try |
|---|---|
| Mainly use the Gold Card or Social Security | Your registered hospital, or a public hospital such as Suan Dok, Nakornping or the Mother and Child Hospital, Regional Health Promotion Center 1 |
| Have a medical condition, a high-risk pregnancy, or the doctor suspects a problem with the baby | A hospital that can handle high-risk pregnancies and critically ill newborns, such as Suan Dok, or a private hospital that confirms it has its own NICU |
| Want to know your budget exactly in advance | A private hospital that publishes its packages with the conditions |
| Live in Mae Rim or Mae Taeng | Nakornping, much closer than the city |
| Want Chiang Mai University Faculty of Medicine doctors with easier appointments | Sriphat Medical Center |
One more thing many people only think about once contractions start: distance! We all know what Chiang Mai traffic is like at 5 p.m. or on a long holiday weekend. Before you decide, try actually driving from home to the hospital once in rush hour.
How do I start antenatal care at a hospital in Chiang Mai?
Quick Answer: Call the antenatal department first to ask which days they take new patients, what documents you need and whether your coverage can be used there. Then go and register as a new patient with your ID card.
- Public hospitals usually have set days and times for new antenatal patients. Some only take patients from their catchment area or with a referral letter, so ask clearly from the start.
- Private hospitals usually let you book a doctor straight away, but ask for the antenatal and birth package details in writing.
- Have the first day of your last period ready, plus your medical history and any medicines you take. If your partner can come, they should bring their ID card too.

Can I use the Gold Card or Social Security for antenatal care and birth?
Quick Answer: Yes, but each scheme has its own conditions, so always check with the hospital or the relevant agency first.
- 8 antenatal visits: the NHSO says its maternal health services, including quality antenatal care at each stage of pregnancy, cover Thai women under every health coverage scheme. Check which service units take part in the Pao Tang app or by calling 1330.
- Gold Card: use it at your registered primary care unit or the unit it refers you to. If you want to give birth somewhere outside your coverage, you may have to pay yourself.
- Social Security: insured people who meet the conditions can claim a flat-rate childbirth allowance and can give birth at either a public or private hospital. Read the conditions and how to claim in Claiming childbirth costs from Social Security.
- Government employees and their families: some private hospitals have separate packages at the Comptroller General’s Department rate. Ask the hospital how much can be billed directly.
How much are birth packages in Chiang Mai, and what should I read in the conditions?
Quick Answer: In this article we only include prices that hospitals publish on their own websites as of the date we checked. For anywhere else, call and ask for a written quote.
Examples published by the hospital (checked 3 October 2026):
| Hospital | Package | Price | Valid until |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai | Natural birth, 2 nights | 53,000 baht | 15 Dec 2026 |
| Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai | C-section, 3 nights | 82,000 baht | 15 Dec 2026 |
| Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai | Comptroller General’s Department rate, natural birth / C-section | 43,100 / 48,800 baht | 15 Dec 2026 |
| Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai | Antenatal package | 48,000 to 74,000 baht | 31 Dec 2026 |
Wherever you go, check all of these before paying a deposit:
- Is the NICU included? The package we read states clearly that if the baby needs the NICU, it is charged at actual cost.
- Twins, instrument-assisted births and complications are usually not included.
- Room type and number of nights: how much extra if you stay longer?
- Doctor’s fees and take-home medicines, including your baby’s newborn vaccines: included or separate?
Which hospitals can care for newborns who need special care?
Quick Answer: Ask the hospital directly whether it has its own NICU. If not, where and how would your baby be transferred?
From what we could check, Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Medicine has a delivery suite that works on preventing complications in newborns, plus a fetal diagnosis center. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai lists newborn services in its Pediatric Center. The cnxlocal guide to giving birth in Chiang Mai (updated September 2026) says Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai, Sriphat, Chiangmai Ram and Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai have a NICU. But this kind of information can change, so call the hospital to confirm.
If your doctor says your pregnancy is high risk, for example high blood pressure, gestational diabetes or a likelihood of preterm birth, honestly, giving birth somewhere that can care for a critically ill newborn under the same roof matters far more than a nice room.
Go to hospital now if…
Quick Answer: Don’t wait for your appointment. If you have any of these, go to the nearest delivery suite or ER, or call 1669 (Thailand’s emergency medical number).
- Vaginal bleeding
- Your waters break, with clear fluid that keeps leaking
- Your baby is moving clearly less than usual, or not moving
- Severe abdominal pain, or regular, frequent tightening before 37 weeks
- A bad headache, blurred vision, pain under the ribs at the top of your stomach, or swelling that is getting worse quickly
- Fever or chills
Save the delivery suite number of your hospital in your phone from day one, and pack your hospital bag by around 34 to 36 weeks.

Questions parents ask
01How do I start antenatal care at a public hospital in Chiang Mai?
Go and register as a new patient with your ID card and say you want antenatal care, or call the antenatal department first, because some big hospitals take antenatal patients based on coverage or a referral letter. If you use the Gold Card, you normally need to start at your registered primary care unit.
02Which hospitals in Chiang Mai can I give birth at with the Gold Card?
Your registered service unit, or the unit it refers you to. Check which unit you are registered with in the Pao Tang app or by calling 1330 before you decide.
03How much can Social Security pay toward the birth if I deliver at a private hospital?
Insured people who are eligible can claim a flat-rate childbirth allowance, and can give birth at either a public or private hospital. Anything above the allowance you pay yourself. See the conditions and how to claim in our article on claiming childbirth costs from Social Security.
04Roughly how much are birth packages at private hospitals in Chiang Mai?
It varies a lot by hospital and room type. As an example the hospital publishes itself, Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai lists a 2-night natural birth package at 53,000 baht and a 3-night C-section package at 82,000 baht (valid until 15 December 2026, checked 3 October 2026). For other hospitals, ask for a written quote.
05Do birth packages include NICU costs?
Mostly not. The package we read states clearly that if the baby needs the NICU, it is charged at actual cost. Ask the hospital whether it has its own NICU or would need to transfer your baby, and what the approximate costs are.
06Can I do antenatal care privately but give birth at a public hospital?
Yes, but tell the hospital where you plan to give birth in advance and bring your antenatal record book every time. Some public hospitals want you to attend antenatal care there for a period first, so it is best to call and ask about their conditions.
