From a pain point while breastfeeding her first baby to a brand Thai moms around the world look for: the story of Nitan

The story of Priya Chailimpamontri, a mom whose clothes didn't work for breastfeeding her first baby, so she designed her own, which became a brand Thai moms abroad look for.

Your baby is crying with hunger in the middle of the mall, and the top you’re wearing is a nightmare to open for feeding. Many breastfeeding moms have probably been frustrated by something like this. The Nitan (นิทาน) brand was born from exactly this problem.

How did it start?

Quick Answer: It came from Priya’s pain point after having her first child: ordinary clothes didn’t work for breastfeeding, so she designed what she herself wanted to use.

How did she sell the first piece?

Quick Answer: Friends saw what she’d made and asked to buy it, and then she launched properly at a mother and baby fair.

Many moms in business will probably recognize this path: make it for yourself first, people around you see it and want one too, then grow from there.

How did it get overseas?

Quick Answer: Through online channels, which became the main way she sells.

According to the Bangkok Bank SME interview, Thai moms living abroad increasingly came to know the brand, and now it has customers in Japan, the UK, Europe and the US.

What can we moms take from this?

This story tells us you don’t have to start with a factory or a big lump sum. Look at whether there’s anything you’ve made for yourself that people have asked to buy. Note down what they like about it, then grow slowly from there. If you enjoy handmade work or design, have a look at the ideas in our income idea finder (in Thai).

Note: We tell this story from a published interview. We received no payment from the brand.

3 lessons for moms who want to start

  1. 01

If friends ask to buy, that's a signal

A product you made for yourself that people around you ask to buy is the cheapest market test there is. Note down who asked and why.

  2. 02

Go to mother and baby fairs to meet customers face to face

Having a booth at an event where moms gather helps you find out fast whether the product clicks, and you get real feedback straight away.

  3. 03

Online takes you further than you think

Thai moms living abroad look for things they know. Open an online shop that can ship overseas and you may find a market you never imagined.
